This six-week series (optionally, just four weeks) explores how to teach Japanese literacy without memorization, plus how to move from receptive ability (reading) to production (writing). The focus is on emergent readers who are true beginners in Japanese, though many of the ideas can be used for other student populations. Weekly Zoom sessions run from 7-8 pm Eastern US. time, with a Q&A session following from 8-8:30. (Session 1 may run later due to demo length.)

Six sessions: May 20 - June 24, 2022 ($200)

The first two sessions will be a NEW 90-minute demo of an unknown language (not Hawaiian, Japanese or Chinese!) with a writing system similar in function to that of Japanese, in which participants will experience reading direct-to-text on an unknown language, and discussion of how to implement Cold Character Reading on the first and subsequent reading lessons dealing with a "set" of language. These sessions are included in the six-session "package" so that those who have previously done a CCR workshop may opt out if they do not want to go through another demo and fundamentals review. This six-week option then continues with the sessions described below.

The remaining four sessions will discuss advancing readers, characteristics of good CCR materials and uses for non-CCR reading materials in the reading cycle, mechanical versus compositional literacy, text-supported writing, retention of symbols, correcting writing work, and peer- and self-editing options. We will also take a tour of ComprehendedCloud.com to see how visuals can be used at each step of an entire unit cycle to support language skills in both oral and written forms.

Sessions will be recorded and available for one month's access by enrolled teachers following each session. By participating in the series, you give permission for your video likeness and voice to be used for other training or promotional purposes.
